OPEN WATER FAQ
Can I book before finishing eLearning?
Yes. Request your pool and quarry dates together. Complete eLearning before getting in the pool. Your request is not a reservation. Wait for BLS to confirm your dates.
Can I complete all four dives in one day?
No. At BLS, Dives 1–2 and Dives 3–4 take place on two separate days.
What do I bring?
Bring your mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit and booties. BLS provides the course training equipment. You may buy personal gear wherever you choose. Buying from One More Chance Scuba is optional. See the gear page.
Are quarry fees included?
Open Water includes entry for its two scheduled quarry days. Additional Open Water quarry days and other courses using the quarry cost $25 per day, collected through BLS and paid directly to the quarry owner. Nitrox has no diving and no quarry fee. Travel courses have separate destination, transportation and lodging costs.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. SDI requires a nonstop 200-metre swim without swimming aids, or a nonstop 300-metre swim using mask, snorkel and fins. You must also complete a 10-minute survival swim or float.
How old must a student be?
SDI permits students ages 10–17 with written parental consent. Ages 10–14 earn Junior Open Water certification with supervision requirements. Contact BLS to discuss training for a younger diver.
What forms do I need?
Complete the SDI liability and medical forms linked from Start Here. Follow the medical questionnaire instructions for any required physician clearance before in-water training.
Do I need a DAN confirmation email?
No. Once BLS successfully enters your information in DAN’s enrollment portal, you are enrolled. After completing your DAN learning courses, email BLS so we can record completion. See the DAN instructions.
Where is the quarry?
Use 5804 New Road, Ravenel in MapQuest or Google Maps to get close. It is a map reference, not the quarry’s actual address. Follow the Locations page directions. Do not cross the railroad tracks.
What if I need to cancel or the weather changes?
Contact BLS promptly. Cancel at least 24 hours before class. A later cancellation may incur a $50 fee. Pay only if BLS confirms it is due. Weather may require rescheduling. Check your email before leaving.
Training basics follow SDI’s Open Water Scuba Diver standards. BLS scheduling and fees are explained above.
